We have several highly ranked courses including public communications, architecture and public policy. When you're making your choice, do not simply look towards the Ivies but think of which school is going to better prepare you for your intended career choice.
As the school is seeking to increase diversity, international students will find that it is not as hard to be awarded admission. However, your SAT score will determine if you are given more opportunities in terms of academic pursuit, such as being invited to be part of the college honors program.
My parents fund my education entirely. International students will find that they might never be awarded financial aid. However, there is a possibility of scholarship, perhaps a few grands per semester. I never got that tho, even if I'm in the honors program.. So I don't really know what the criteria is.
My public communications courses are challenging but I've learnt so much from them. The professors and TA's are all very ready to help you out provided you take the initiative to approach them first. Whoever said studying in the US will be a breeze is lying. I found lessons as stimulating and the work load as heavy as back in Singapore, and bear in mind that I came from the top junior college. However, if you are good at time management, academic excellence need not come at the expense of your social life.
The college environment and facilities are top rate. However, its natural environment may not appeal to everyone. For one, the weather gets exceptionally cold and most south east asians may find this hard to adjust to. But bring a couple heavy duty coats and jackets and you'll be fine, trust me. The other let down is that Syracuse is not quite the liveliest city in the US. I legitimately have a view of factories and so called "projects" from my dorm. The mall is also about a good 40 minutes bus ride away. BUT it IS one of the biggest malls in the US, so that makes up for everything, pretty much. A number of good restaurants on campus, particularly the Indian and Korean ones. However you might not be so inclined to dine out regularly because the meal plan (compulsory for freshmen and sophomores) is pretty expensive already. Though you might have some spare cash from part time work on campus which are readily available.
For Newhouse (public communications) students, I would say definitely. Not to mention that this is really the only area that I can speak for. The communications program has a huge, distinguished alumni and the faculty hail from top positions in various professions so networking is not a problem. There is also a regular communications career development e-zine that informs students of internship opportunities. You can definitely trust in the Newhouse name to bring you a few extra glances at your resumé.
