Advice to future students would really depend on their field of study. If they are coming to the US for the social sciences and humanities I think New York offers no end of resources and is really a wonderful place to be for seminars and conferences. NYU doesnt have the kind of South Asia resources as say Columbia, but they are certainly working on building them.
I took GRE and TOEFL exams as a part of the mandatory admission process. I prepared on my own however I took mock tests from Jamboree, New Delhi. I did not hire a counselor. I did need a VISA and the interview was very simple and straightforward. It was easy to get tickets. Over the past few years I have used British Airways, KLM and Air India. All these airlines were pretty good. I was not offered any students fare. I was offered students fare once, but not usually. I landed at JFK,New York which was quite close to the university. There was no Meet and Greet service at the airport.
PhD is fully funded so no need for part time.
For PhD I feel there is too much time required for coursework. Other than that on the whole a very positive experience at NYU. Professors are good for the most part. Lecture Halls are mostly satisfactory, but New York City always has a space problem so many of the rooms are cramped. NYU library is wonderful in terms of resources and books but they have not succeeded so far in making it a quiet space for study. They have also not provided enough outlets for laptops.
I have grad housing but thankfully an apartment. It is not campus housing but is an apartment in a private complex that NYU subsidizes for us. This facility is available only for the first year. By NYC standards it is a decent size but coming from India and Chicago I find it rather small and poorly ventilated. Have had major pest control issues as well, and also had problems with one of the appliances. Despite this, I would say that the university management was helpful in getting all these problems fixed. The other problem is that though it is a 2 bedroom and both of us pay the same rent, there is a huge difference in the room sizes. We have good sports facility. In NYC there is no dearth of opportunities to socialize and network or to pursue whatever interests you, it really depends on whether you have the time, which I usually dont! The night life is very vibrant but I have never really checked it out. There isnt really an international society as such. I think they have one for undergrads.
There is a placement cell. There is a process and I have heard its good but have no personal experience of it. I am nowhere near a job search process right now. If I were in it I would be looking at academic institutions and NGOs and not companies, so again my perspective would be very different. No idea about the placement process, but from random emails I keep getting from the placement cell I am guessing its a good number! Dont know about work permit. I think there is an alumni society, again not much of an idea about placements.
